-Boy's Life, Pocket Books) by Robert McCammon. Much props to good friend and fellow author Bob Ford for this recommendation. I've always been a sucker for horror/dark fiction "coming of age" stories: It, The Body (Stand by Me), Summer of Night, Ghoul, Something Wicked This Way Comes....and that BIG NOVEL I hope to write someday will be a poor attempt at homage to all those. This is the real deal, though. Just started it, and I'm in love. Small town. Mysterious goings on. Magic, found and lost. Monsters hiding within the familiar. All told through a twelve year old's eyes. Thanks, Bob.
- Mystery, (Signet), by Peter Straub. *Grumble, Grumble* I WAS reading this. I misplaced it switching cars with the inlaws, and now I can't find it. Good thing I started Boy's Life....
- Something Wicked This Way Comes, by Ray Bradbury. Yes, it's that time of year not only for the dark fantastic, but for my reading schedule to go off the charts because of the novels I teach at school. That's okay. This is an annual MUST anyway. Poetic, touching, eerie, thrilling...in my mind, the quintessential Halloween/buddies novel. Makes reading three books at once worthwhile, but all I can say is: thank goodness for prep periods...

3. Just Arrived in the Mail: (new category, because of all the books I receive)
Solitary, (David C. Cook), by Travis Thrasher. Travis has solid writing chops. I really enjoyed Ghostwriter, and I'm looking forward to this one, a YA/Teen series. Can't wait to see what he's got for me this time...
Hey m' friend! Nice list you've got going on there - and glad you're digging A Boy's Life. Hope it packs the same punch it did with me... quite an amazing book.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure it will - definitely one of those works that makes you think: "I'll never write as fine as this; not in a million years..."
